COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

"If not for Wide Horizons, I would not know what community is" - WH alumni, Maung Myo Htun

Community Development is a course where students learn necessary development skills through the project cycle in the classroom, reflect on experiences they learn practicing skills at Wide Horizons Organizational Development Program (WH) and apply what they learn in community projects.

The students begin the course exploring community development philosophy and practicing research skills to better understand the border community. The students then work in groups to assess community needs to prepare for an intense proposal writing process where the students submit proposals for community projects to local and international donors.

Every year, the students implement and manage at least one project to improve the WH community and one project in the Mawlamyine community. The students have completed over a dozen projects in Mae Sot when WH was there. The students finish the year evaluating and reporting about their projects which are essential skills for the students when they return to their organizations.

In additional to the community development curriculum, the students also receive translation and interpretation training, video editing and shooting, fundraising workshops, photography workshops, reproductive health training and various other academic additions to complement their academic studies.
